Within that band there is normal variation: some Poms sit at the lighter end, some at the heavier, and both are perfectly healthy. What matters is that the dog lands inside the standard rather than being pushed above or below it.

The growth timeline: frame first, coat later
Pomeranian puppies grow quickly and finish early. Most reach close to their adult height and weight by around nine to twelve months, so what you see at a year is largely the size the dog will stay. The frame settles first, and the trademark coat keeps developing afterwards.
That coat timeline surprises new owners. A young Pom often looks thinner and less fluffy through adolescence, including the normal stage owners call the "puppy uglies", before the full adult double coat comes in over the following months. No method is exact, but a few honest signals help. The size of the parents is the best guide, which is one more reason to buy from a source that can show you them. Your vet can estimate from growth and frame at a check-up, and by around nine to twelve months the dog is close to its final size. Be very cautious of any seller who guarantees a precise tiny adult weight in advance, that is a teacup marketing red flag, not a real promise.
Throwback and teacup: the two sizing myths
Two labels muddy the water at opposite ends of the scale. A "throwback" Pomeranian is a larger dog, often 4 to 6 kg, that echoes the breed's bigger spitz ancestors. It is genuine genetics, but it sits outside the standard, and it is not what we place. If a "Pomeranian" is notably chunky, it may be a throwback or a mix.
At the other end, a "teacup" Pomeranian is marketed as extra small. There is no recognised teacup size, and the term describes deliberately undersized dogs bred for smallness at the expense of health. Neither extreme is the honest, healthy Pom. Can you predict adult size from a puppy?
Not precisely, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing with confidence. What does predict well is the parents. Ask what the mother and father weigh as adults, because a puppy usually lands somewhere between them, and that single question is worth more than any measurement taken at eight weeks.
Judge size at five or six months rather than at collection. By then the frame is most of the way there and the coat has not yet arrived to confuse the picture. Be wary of any seller who quotes a guaranteed adult weight, particularly a very low one, because that guarantee is either meaningless or a promise to breed for smallness. Is your Pomeranian the right weight?
A double coat hides weight gain better than almost any other coat type, which is why overweight Pomeranians are so common and so often unnoticed. On a 2.5 kg dog, 400 extra grams is a 16% increase, and it lands on knees and a windpipe that are already the breed's two weak points.
Check by feel rather than by eye. Run your fingertips along the ribcage with light pressure. You should feel the ribs clearly under a thin layer, the way you feel the bones on the back of your own hand. If you have to press to find them, the dog is carrying too much. Looking down from above, there should be a visible waist behind the ribs. Do this monthly, because the change is gradual and the coat is generous. The link between weight and knees, trachea and small-breed health is direct, and weight is the one variable you fully control.
